Why do we learn PSHE? 

Like all children in the UK, children at Blaby Stokes are growing up in an increasingly complex world which has changed significantly even since their parents were at school. The rapid development of the online world presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment it is vital that we ensure that our children know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) at Blaby Stokes enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. Pupils are actively encouraged to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community and taught how to manage and express their beliefs and emotions to enable them to do so.

Through PSHE lessons, and our daily collective worship, we teach them how society is organised and governed and about their rights and responsibilities within it. Our aim is that they appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a culturally diverse society.

What does PSHE look like at Blaby Stokes?

At Blaby Stokes much of our PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) curriculum is delivered through the ‘Cambridgeshire Primary Personal Development Programme’ framework which is designed to build progressively, adding skills and knowledge as the pupils grow and mature and journey from Nursery through to Year 6.

The framework covers four key strands in personal development

  • Myself and My Relationship
  • Healthy and Safer Lifestyles
  • Citizenship
  • Economic Wellbeing 

In addition, children develop their ability to regulate and express their emotions through completing a Zones of Emotional Regulation unit every year. The skills learned in this unit aid the children in understanding and expressing their feelings both in and out of school. 

Children’s knowledge and understanding of the world is developed further and linked with their personal, social and health learning through their studies in all curriculum subjects. Our behaviour policy further develops the children’s understanding of their place in society as they are supported to understand the impact of their actions on those around them and take restorative action to correct their mistakes where appropriate.
