Computing

What does Computing look like at Blaby Stokes?

Our aims: 

  • can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation 
  • can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems 
  • can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems 
  • are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

Children at Blaby Stokes have weekly computing lessons where they have access to sets of laptops and iPads. Occasionally, lessons may be blocked to teach a set of lessons together rather than weekly. Teachers also incorporate Computing and the use of ICT in lessons across the curriculum. In KS1 and KS2 we teach Computing using a scheme of work which is organised into six strands. Each half term lessons will be designed in order for pupils to work towards answering a ‘big question’ from one of the six strands. E.g. What is an algorithm? How do we collaborate online? Why do we use spreadsheets?

They will explore the key concepts of the strand and develop essential computing skills which children will use and develop as they progress through primary school. These strands also include online safety and digital literacy themes that are embedded into lessons.

Our youngest children in EYFS also have also dedicated series of lessons which have been designed to incorporate technology into lessons and provide a solid foundation for Computing at Key Stage 1.

Strand 0

Key Skills: Getting Started with the Computer

This strand helps ensure that all pupils are equipped with the basic ICT skills to be able to access a computer or tablet effectively and search for information on the World Wide Web.

  

Strand 1 Communicating: Text & Images

 

This strand focuses on creating digital artefacts by combining text and images, with the aim of communicating information effectively.

Strand 2 Communicating: Multimedia

 

This strand focuses on creating digital artefacts by combining different media (audio, text, images and video), with the aim of communicating information or expressing oneself creatively.

Strand 3 Understanding & Sharing Data

 

This strand looks at how we make sense of data and present it in order to convey information. This can be simple numerical data displayed in a pictogram, or a combination of data in a database.

Strands 4 & 5 Computational Thinking & Programming

These two strands provide ways of teaching the key computational thinking and computer science concepts and approaches through a combination of unplugged activities (away from the computer) and a selection of programming software and hardware.

Why is Computing important?

Computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology… Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.
